<p><span style="font-family: trebuchet ms, helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>1. <span style="font-size: 18px;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Physical  </span></span>- </strong>Now is NOT the time to start an ambitious new diet or physical activity regimen. After all, you want to SUCCEED, right? Instead, aim to <span style="text-decoration: underline;">maintain </span>during this schedule-out-the-window, calorie-and-fat-laden time of year. Make a commitment to yourself to grab opportunities for small activity breaks. Even a few 10-minute walks sprinkled between Holiday commitments can add up! As for the abundance of tempting treats (appetizers, main course, desserts!!) you may encounter, my advice is the same any time of year: &#8220;Be Strategic and Choose with Intention!&#8221; This does NOT mean skipping meals so you can have 3 desserts &#8211; it means ensuring you are still getting a variety of healthy foods (to fuel your body!) and THEN choosing the treats which you enjoy MOST, and then <span style="text-decoration: underline;">REALLY </span>enjoying them! I call these choices &#8220;worthy calories&#8221;.</span></p>
<p><strong>2. <span style="font-size: 18px;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Relational </span></span>- </strong>We need to realize that people are&#8230;well&#8230;people. So the same personalities, quirks, and challenges that exist the rest of the year are still likely there over the Holidays. In fact, they may be magnified. Prepare yourself for that. That strange uncle is still going to be strange, and that sibbling who likes to &#8216;push your buttons&#8217; probably won&#8217;t change just because it&#8217;s the Holidays. And we tend to be in particularly close quarters this time of year, with family get-togethers, parties, etc. What can you do? Be REAL: manage your own expectations of the interactions, manage your contributions to them, and make space. Whether you&#8217;re the host or the guest, it is perfectly acceptable to take a break now and then, have a breather, and then rejoin the group. Chances are you&#8217;re not the only one who could use a bit of space, and all will benefit from it.</p>
<p><span style="font-family: trebuchet ms, helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong>3. <span style="font-size: 18px;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Emotional </span></span>- </strong>When we think of the Holidays, we tend to think of the more joyous aspects of the season &#8211; and that&#8217;s great! However, it is wise to remember that this is an emotionally-charged time of year and that, for some, it can be very difficult. There are people around us who may be particularly vulnerable this time of year &#8211; perhaps they have no one to celebrate with, they may be grieving the loss of a loved one in the past year, they may be suffering financially and find the extra demands on their budget very stressful. In the spirit of the season, reaching out to these people can be rewarding for both the giver and the receiver. And even for those who are celebrating the joy of the season, crammed schedules, heightened expectations, compromised nutrition, etc. can still produce stress. Being aware of this, and paying attention to your own emotional wellness can help you move through the Holidays with greater ease.</span></p>
<p><strong>4. <span style="font-size: 18px;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Financial </span></span>-</strong> It is so easy to get caught up in the frenzy of the season and get sucked into the vortex of &#8216;shop-til-you-drop&#8217;! But what are the implications of this? There are many but let&#8217;s just look at a few: (a) you&#8217;re exhausted from all the running around and waiting through line-ups, (b) the more &#8216;stuff&#8217; that is brought into your home, the more there is to tidy, organize, dust, fix, etc. (unless you also purge older items to create space for the new ones), (c) you have likely spent more than you could really afford by using credit. In short, this simply defers the stress to the new year, when the bills become due. What&#8217;s the recommended strategy? Again, be REAL: focus on quality over quantity, spend within your means, and invest in the time spent together instead of trinkets and toys.</p>
<p><strong>5. <span style="font-size: 18px;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Everything in Moderation!</span></span> &#8211; </strong>To &#8216;wrap up&#8217; these tips on &#8220;Whole-Life Wellness&#8221;, the overall strategy is simple: Everything in Moderation:</p>
<p>~ Gifts<br />
~ Food/Drink<br />
~ Inactivity/activity<br />
~ Time commitments</p>
<p>The more &#8220;REAL&#8221; we can be during the Holidays, the more we set ourselves &#8211; and our families &#8211; up for success in the New Year!</p>
<p><strong>Wishing you and yours a Holiday Season of Health, Happiness, and Gratitude, and a New Year filled with &#8220;Whole-Life&#8221; Abundance!</strong></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here it is, November 7 already. Hard to believe it&#8217;s been a week since the ghosts, ghouls, and goblins got all dressed up and prowled our neighbourhoods in search of Treats!! It was a great day, the kids (and many adults) had a LOT of FUN, and there was more than enough chocolate, chips and candy to go &#8217;round!</p>
<p>And let&#8217;s not forget our beloved teachers and childcare providers who have enjoyed the &#8220;hangover&#8221; from all these goodies &#8211; we owe you our thanks!</p>
<p>So, as your <strong>Wellness Coach</strong>, it&#8217;s my job to deliver the news you all knew was coming: <strong>&#8220;The Honeymoon&#8217;s Over!&#8221; &#8211; the &#8220;Halloween Honeymoon&#8221;, that is!! </strong></p>
<p>Sure, we had a great time (myself included!) and got really cozy with those bags, boxes, and bowls of treats, but it&#8217;s time to come back to reality.</p>
<p>If the thought of going &#8220;cold turkey&#8221; back to your usual &#8220;everything-in-moderation&#8221; way of eating healthy sounds overwhelming, may I suggest you begin to &#8220;wean&#8221; yourself off the goodies? When I talk about &#8220;borrowing&#8221; from one area of your &#8220;<em><strong>Whole-Life Wellness Wheel</strong></em>&#8221; to support another, this is a prime example: we have borrowed from the <strong>Healthy Eating </strong>piece of <strong>Physical Wellness</strong>, but now it&#8217;s time to repay the debt and get back on track. After all, if the &#8220;honeymoon&#8221; lasts too long, it could very easily morphe into the Christmas Holidays&#8230;and we, wouldn&#8217;t want that, would we? <img src='http://lighthousewellness.ca/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>So&#8230;join me, won&#8217;t you? You can hide/lose the goodies, freeze the chocolate bars for an occasional treat, accidentally drive over them&#8230;whatever works for you.</p>
<p>Also, a <strong>great idea </strong>from my friend, Angela: after the peak excitement of the Halloween season has passed, she offers her kids a <strong>&#8220;buy-back&#8221; option</strong>: for every 5 pieces of candy they sell back to her (or whatever number works for you), they get $1 in Dollar Store bucks &#8211; they go shopping and the candy is gone! I&#8217;m liking it &#8211; think I&#8217;ll try it too!!</p>
<p>If you try this, or have another suggestion, I&#8217;d love to hear about it!</p>

<p>	The Wellness Expo is a great event to learn about the latest and greatest in Health and Personal Growth. 	According to the <em>NovaKnowledge Report Card on Health, Safety and Prosperity </em>(June 2010), Nova Scotia lags behind most of the rest of the country on several health and wellness indicators, including having some of the poorest rankings on the following:</p>
<p>	&bull;&nbsp;Cardiovascular disease/high blood pressure (ranking 1st in Canada = worst)<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;Mood disorders (1st)<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;Newly reported cases of cancer (1st)<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;Excess weight (2nd)<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;Diabetes (3rd)</p>
<p>	And we know that employee <strong>absenteeism </strong>is costing NS a whopping <strong>$538 million per year</strong>!! What we also know is that absenteeism is not always due to illness or injury &ndash; sometimes it is a reflection of workplace (or personal) stress, lack of employee engagement, and other factors over which the organization has some influence.</p>
<p>	In this era of global competition &ndash; and even just within the Canadian marketplace &ndash; it is evident that the costs we are paying in absenteeism are making it very difficult for Nova Scotia (and Atlantic Canada) to compete!</p>
<p>	<span class="subTitle" style="font-size: 16px;font-weight: bold;color: #333333;font-style: normal;font-family: Helvetica;margin: 15px 0 5px 0;text-align: left;padding: 0;"><span style="font-size: 14px"><span style="color: #0000ff"><strong>What we know:</strong></span></span></span><br />
	&bull;&nbsp;Our population is aging: Nova Scotia has the highest proportion of seniors (at 16.0%), a number which is expected to nearly double within the next 25 years!*<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;Our incidents of serious disease and injury are some of the worst in the country<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;Our workforce consists of various generations, each with its own values and motivations<br />
	&bull;&nbsp;Keeping and retaining quality workers, from a shrinking labour pool, is challenging&nbsp;</p>

	<span style="font-size: 14px"><span style="color: #0000ff"><strong>But what can we do?</strong></span></span><br />
	We need to invest in our workforce where it generates the biggest value for our employees and for the organization. The smartest employers are realizing the value of Workplace Wellness Programs in terms of increasing the following:</p>

	&bull; Profitability<br />

	Some local organizations are leading the charge in terms of employee health and wellness, and are reaping the rewards.</p>
<p>	For example, Emera and its largest subsidiary, Nova Scotia Power, realize the value of investing in their employees&rsquo; health and wellness. According to a May 13 article in The Chronicle Herald featuring Emera&rsquo;s Executive Vice-President of Human Resources and &ldquo;Chief Fitness Officer&rdquo;, Sarah MacDonald, Emera has seen significant benefits since focussing on employee health and wellness in 2001. They boast incidents of sick leave at half the national average, and an incredible <strong>return of over $7 for every $1 spent on employee health and wellness!!</strong></p>
<p>	<span style="font-size: 14px"><span style="color: #0000ff"><strong>Who Do <u>You</u> Know?</strong></span></span><br />

<h1>What Would You Change in Your Life…If You Knew You Could?</h1>
<p>Is there something you would like to <strong>do differently </strong>in your life? Something you would <strong>like more (or less) of</strong>? Is there a <strong>change</strong> you would like to make…but you just feel <em><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">STUCK</span></strong></em>?</p>
<p>As I’ve been working with my clients recently, one thing is becoming clear: most are at a point of <em><strong>transition</strong></em> in their life – they’re trying to make a change (in one or more areas) but may need a little support to help them get <strong>UN-stuck</strong>!  </p>
<p>Some need <strong>guidance</strong> in developing strategies. Some need help with <strong>accountability</strong> – keeping them on track to accomplish what they’ve set out to do. Some need a gentle <strong>nudge</strong>, or perhaps a sturdier <strong>push</strong>. Still others may need <strong>suggestions</strong> of some <strong>additional resources</strong> to help them achieve their goals. Some need help for a <strong>little while</strong> (just a few sessions), others benefit from a <strong>longer-term relationship</strong>.</p>
<p>They all have one thing in common: they are undergoing a <strong>change </strong>(either one they desire or one which is outside their control), and they are taking the <strong>initiative</strong> to obtain help in navigating it successfully.</p>
<p>What are the top concerns my clients ask for help with? The <span style="text-decoration: underline;">top 4</span> are as follows:</p>
<ul>
<li>How to <strong>eat healthier</strong></li>
<li>How to incorporate more or better <strong>physical activity</strong> into their day</li>
<li>How to better manage <strong>stress</strong> in their lives</li>
<li>How to have a better, more satisfying <strong>career</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>Because we take a “<strong>whole-life</strong>” perspective to <strong>Wellness Coaching &amp; Navigation</strong>, we naturally consider all aspects of the individual’s life:</p>
<ul>
<li>Physical (healthy eating &amp; physical activity)</li>
<li>Emotional</li>
<li>Spiritual</li>
<li>Relational (family &amp; friends)</li>
<li>Financial</li>
<li>Professional</li>
</ul>
<p>While clients usually have one or two main areas they want to address, they appreciate the “whole-life” approach since they know we will not sabotage one area for another. After all, the goal is to help you achieve <em><strong>greater abundance in your overall life!</strong></em></p>
<p>So…is there some part of your life where you feel STUCK? Is there something you would like to achieve for yourself, but don’t know quite how to get there? Or do you know that “something’s missing” but you’re just not sure what you want? Would you like some help figuring out how to get from where you are to where you’d like to be?</p>
<p>My biggest hope for you can be summed up by my personal philosophy of <em><strong>“No Regrets!”</strong></em> If you don’t take a chance – take that first step – how will you ever know what could have been? Whatever that “first step” is for you, I encourage you to take it – <em><strong>TODAY</strong></em>!! You’ll never know if you don’t try.</p>

According to the <em>NovaKnowledge Report Card</em> from June 2010, Nova Scotia lags behind most of the rest of the country on several health and wellness indicators. And we know that employee <strong>absenteeism</strong> is costing us a whopping <strong>$538 million per year</strong>!! In this era of global competition – and even just within the Canadian marketplace – it is evident that such costs make it very difficult for Nova Scotia to compete!</p>

		<title>Is &#8220;Requiring More&#8221; and &#8220;Doing More&#8221; the Same Thing?</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As I&#8217;ve been working with my clients recently, I&#8217;ve been mulling over the idea of &#8220;<strong>requiring more of ourselves</strong>&#8220;. I am very careful with language and want to suggest that &#8220;<strong>requiring more&#8221; is <em>not</em> necessarily the same as &#8220;doing more</strong>&#8220;.</p>
<p>I work with a number of busy, working women who try to juggle many different &#8220;balls&#8221; in their lives (of which work is only one, but a significant one). These fabulous women have a LOT going for them but, given the many pressures of their daily lives, but sometimes express frustration at not being able to do more.</p>
<p>I face similar challenges &#8211; as an entrepreneur and a mother &#8211; and, as a &#8220;recovering perfectionist&#8221;, find myself thinking about &#8220;requiring more&#8221; of myself on occasion. However, what this means is&#8230;in the <strong>CONTEXT</strong> of my <strong>VALUES</strong> and my <strong>PRIORITIES</strong>, finding ways to more <strong>efficientlyand effectively</strong> accomplish what is important to me and what enables me to honour the commitments I <strong>choose</strong> to make.</p>
<p>I encourage my clients to be <strong>intentional</strong> with their <strong>choices</strong> (yes, they are choices!) and to ensure that what they <strong>DO</strong> is <strong>consistent</strong> with their <strong>values</strong> and <strong>priorities</strong> &#8211; and to consider their choices in the context of their &#8220;<strong>Whole-Life Wellness</strong>&#8220;. As one of my clients astutely pointed out using a principle of economics, there is an &#8220;opportunity cost&#8221; to our decisions: for everything we say &#8220;yes&#8221; to, there is something else to which we must then say &#8220;no&#8221;. FYI, &#8220;no&#8221; does not mean &#8220;I don&#8217;t care about what your are doing&#8221; or &#8220;Your priorities are not important to me&#8221;, it simply means that &#8220;<em>At this time, I am not able to commit my time/energy/attention/(fill in the blank) to what you are asking of me&#8221;</em>. You are better to give 100% of yourself to your current priorities than spread yourself too thin and give only 25% attention to 4 things.</p>
<p>So, while I am a big proponent of striving for growth and development in our personal and professional lives, I encourage you to &#8220;require more of yourself&#8221; in a strategic, intentional way &#8211; one that reinforces and supports those aspects of your life that are most important to YOU!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It’s said that, if you have nothing else to say, you can always talk about the weather. And plenty of people have been doing just that lately. However, given our recent run of ‘hydration’, predicting rain is no longer news.</p>
<p>So far, it has been a very soggy Spring and, from people I’ve been talking to lately, it seems many are losing their humour with these “April showers” which are said to “bring May flowers”! After all, it’s almost mid-May already!</p>
<p>But, as with almost anything in life, there IS a bright side. Really!</p>
<p>The rainy weather we’ve been ‘enjoying’ is a perfect time for introspection – to give yourself TIME to actually THINK – about what you want, what you love to do, what ‘new life’ you will create in this time of natural renewal.</p>
<p>Sometimes, the nice weather comes on so quickly that we rush outside in a frenzy, without giving ourselves a time of transition between Winter hibernation and Summer  play. Why not take this opportunity to reevaluate what’s important to YOU, what YOUR priorities and desires are, and CREATE the coming season with intention?</p>
<p>Just trying to help us all “look on bright side”!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As you may know, <strong><em>March is Nutrition Month</em></strong>. When you hear that, does it give you heart palpitations? A fluttery stomach perhaps? Or perhaps you’re very comfortable with your nutritional awareness and choices.</p>
<p>If you’re like many of the people I deal with, you may find the whole notion of Nutrition and Healthy Eating a bit overwhelming, particularly given all the “busy-ness” we tend to have in our lives. But I’m here to tell you it doesn’t have to be so complicated. My goal is to help clients <strong>make Healthy Eating more simple, practical, and possible in the reality of our daily lives</strong> – sound interesting?</p>
<p>So…<span style="text-decoration: underline;">I’d love to hear from you</span>! What would make it easier for you to make healthier food choices:</p>

<p>February is ‘Heart Month’ and the month in which we celebrate Valentine’s Day. It conjures up images of lovebirds, beautiful floral bouquets, and decadent chocolate treats.</p>

<p>I’m a romantic like the next girl but, this month, I ask you to leave fantasy behind for just a little while and look at REALITY. In particular, how “real” are you being in terms of your heart health and the lifestyle choices you make to support your heart?</p>
<p>As a Wellness Coach &amp; Navigator, I have a responsibility to sometimes “say it like it is” – no “sugar-coating”. This is one of those times.</p>
<p>A recent report from the Heart &amp; Stroke Foundation gave some startling statistics: it indicates that <strong>9 out of 10 of us </strong>(that’s right – 90%) have <strong>at least one risk factor for heart disease</strong>, and many of us have multiple risk factors!</p>
<p>The study (<a href="http://lighthousewellness.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=624807902152249f67d043b2d&amp;id=03729a5365&amp;e=b9db2b89a6">Heart Disease H&amp;S F Report</a>) indicates that one of the biggest issues is that <strong>Canadians are in DENIAL</strong> and underestimate the severity of their risk factors, including (reported vs. reality):</p>
<ul>
<li>How many of us believe we are <strong>healthy</strong> (90% vs. 1 in 10 <span style="text-decoration: underline;">without</span> a risk factor for heart disease)</li>
<li>Being <strong>physically inactive or getting too few daily servings of fruits and vegetables</strong> (1/3 vs. ½)</li>
<li>Adults who believe they are<strong> obese</strong> (18% vs. 25%).</li>
</ul>
