We know that our lives are not one-dimensional and that “whole-life” wellness requires us to pay attention to how the pieces of our lives are integrated and affect one another.

Here you will find posts related to one or more of the segments of the “Whole-Life” Wellness Wheel –

  • Emotional Wellness – knowing how our emotions may be controlling us and how we can turn that around to us using our emotions to achieve our goals
  • Financial Wellness – exploring the impact of financial realism on our total wellness – whether we are an individual or an organization
  • Physical Wellness (Healthy Eating and Physical Activity) – how to use nutrition and physical activity to support our bodies and allow us to achieve wellness in the other aspects of our lives
  • Professional Wellness – how our work is supporting the rest of our lives (far more than “work-life balance”!)
  • Relational Wellness (Friends and Family) – how our relationships with family, friends, coworkers, and ourselves impact the “big picture”
  • Spiritual Wellness – identifying what makes us “tick”, what feeds our soul, what gets us “jazzed”!

Please feel free to comment on any blog – your feedback and thoughts are always welcome!!

As I’ve been working with my clients recently, I’ve been mulling over the idea of “requiring more of ourselves“. I am very careful with language and want to suggest that “requiring more” is not necessarily the same as “doing more“.

I work with a number of busy, working women who try to juggle many different “balls” in their lives (of which work is only one, but a significant one). These fabulous women have a LOT going for them but, given the many pressures of their daily lives, but sometimes express frustration at not being able to do more.

I face similar challenges – as an entrepreneur and a mother – and, as a “recovering perfectionist”, find myself thinking about “requiring more” of myself on occasion. However, what this means is…in the CONTEXT of my VALUES and my PRIORITIES, finding ways to more efficientlyand effectively accomplish what is important to me and what enables me to honour the commitments I choose to make.

I encourage my clients to be intentional with their choices (yes, they are choices!) and to ensure that what they DO is consistent with their values and priorities – and to consider their choices in the context of their “Whole-Life Wellness“. As one of my clients astutely pointed out using a principle of economics, there is an “opportunity cost” to our decisions: for everything we say “yes” to, there is something else to which we must then say “no”. FYI, “no” does not mean “I don’t care about what your are doing” or “Your priorities are not important to me”, it simply means that “At this time, I am not able to commit my time/energy/attention/(fill in the blank) to what you are asking of me”. You are better to give 100% of yourself to your current priorities than spread yourself too thin and give only 25% attention to 4 things.

So, while I am a big proponent of striving for growth and development in our personal and professional lives, I encourage you to “require more of yourself” in a strategic, intentional way – one that reinforces and supports those aspects of your life that are most important to YOU!

Wishing you Whole-Life Wellness,

Gail

“They say it might rain…!”

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

It’s said that, if you have nothing else to say, you can always talk about the weather. And plenty of people have been doing just that lately. However, given our recent run of ‘hydration’, predicting rain is no longer news.

So far, it has been a very soggy Spring and, from people I’ve been talking to lately, it seems many are losing their humour with these “April showers” which are said to “bring May flowers”! After all, it’s almost mid-May already!

But, as with almost anything in life, there IS a bright side. Really!

The rainy weather we’ve been ‘enjoying’ is a perfect time for introspection – to give yourself TIME to actually THINK – about what you want, what you love to do, what ‘new life’ you will create in this time of natural renewal.

Sometimes, the nice weather comes on so quickly that we rush outside in a frenzy, without giving ourselves a time of transition between Winter hibernation and Summer  play. Why not take this opportunity to reevaluate what’s important to YOU, what YOUR priorities and desires are, and CREATE the coming season with intention?

Just trying to help us all “look on bright side”!

Happy Spring!

What Would Help You Put a Little SPRING in Your Step?

Ahhhh, Spring!! Yes, it is here – officially – and feeling more like it each week!

Spring naturally conjures up images…of freshness, new growth, clean starts!

So, are you still carrying the “weightiness” of winter? Do you feel like you’re just coming out of hibernation…perhaps reluctantly? If so, what would help you to bounce into Spring with enthusiasm and vigour? Do you need a little “nudge” here or a small “push” there…or perhaps just a “running mate” to help you “rev up your engine” again?

Perhaps you need to do some “Spring cleaning” of your old habits, things that “clutter up” your daily routine but don’t really serve you and get you to your goals? Or maybe you just need help “dusting off” those new behaviours that were your New Year’s Resolutions, and bring them back out into the light?

As a Wellness Coach, I help my clients clear out what’s no longer working for them, or create new beginnings that support their goals of living with more abundance on a day-to-day basis – not waiting for that “some day” when everything will be easier.

If that sounds appealing to you, contact me for a FREE Consultation to see how we can work together to bring more abundance and “whole-life wellness” into YOUR LIFE! If you already know you’re ready for a change, go to my website (www.lighthousewellness.ca) and select the Coaching options that work best for you.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Launching Small Group Coaching Sessions – See Why That Matters To You

While many people thrive in individual (1-on-1) coaching sessions, we realize that some may prefer other options. Some clients prefer Small Group Coaching sessions.

What are some of the BENEFITS of Small Group Coaching?

  • Shared learning as the participants work on similar goals together
  • Social support among participants – both during and after the sessions
  • More economical than individual sessions (only $120 per session) – share the cost among 2, 3, or even 4 participants

Small Group Coaching sessions are kept to a small size in order to support the intimacy of the group and to ensure each participant gets sufficient individual attention and support during the sessions.

Who participates in Small Group Coaching sessions?

Any small number of people who want to work on a similar issue – perhaps focussing on Healthy Eating or Physical Activity, better ways to navigate Stress, improving the Professional segment of your “Whole-Life Wellness Wheel”, etc.

How Would I Get a Small Group Together?

Some suggestions for who you may want to bring together to share Small Group Coaching sessions include:

  • Co-workers
  • Neighbours
  • Family members
  • Friends

For any clients who register for Small Group Coaching sessions by March 31, 2011, you will receive my FREE BONUS: 8 Tips to Living with Greater “Whole-Life Wellness”.

What’s YOUR Nutrition Challenge?

Friday, March 18th, 2011

As you may know, March is Nutrition Month. When you hear that, does it give you heart palpitations? A fluttery stomach perhaps? Or perhaps you’re very comfortable with your nutritional awareness and choices.

If you’re like many of the people I deal with, you may find the whole notion of Nutrition and Healthy Eating a bit overwhelming, particularly given all the “busy-ness” we tend to have in our lives. But I’m here to tell you it doesn’t have to be so complicated. My goal is to help clients make Healthy Eating more simple, practical, and possible in the reality of our daily lives – sound interesting?

So…I’d love to hear from you! What would make it easier for you to make healthier food choices:

  • Advice on how to read (and understand) Nutrition Labels?
  • Deciphering what’s in those Ingredient lists on your favourite foods?
  • Making healthier food choices when on-the-go?
  • How to make more nutritious meals at home – while not compromising taste and texture?
  • How to find and use more healthy recipes?
  • Something else?

My goal, in my Blogs and e-Newsletter – and in my Wellness Coaching and Workplace Wellness Programs – is to give you information that’s relevant to YOU!

Please feel free to post a Comment or Question, send me a message via my website or e-mail, or give me a call – let me know how I can help YOU live with greater “Whole-Life” Wellness!

May your food nourish your Body, Mind and Spirit!

“How’s YOUR Heart?”

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

Lighthouse Wellness Strategies Newsletter – February 2011

February is ‘Heart Month’ – What Are You Doing for YOUR Heart?

February is ‘Heart Month’ and the month in which we celebrate Valentine’s Day. It conjures up images of lovebirds, beautiful floral bouquets, and decadent chocolate treats.

I’m a romantic like the next girl but, this month, I ask you to leave fantasy behind for just a little while and look at REALITY. In particular, how “real” are you being in terms of your heart health and the lifestyle choices you make to support your heart?

As a Wellness Coach & Navigator, I have a responsibility to sometimes “say it like it is” – no “sugar-coating”. This is one of those times.

A recent report from the Heart & Stroke Foundation gave some startling statistics: it indicates that 9 out of 10 of us (that’s right – 90%) have at least one risk factor for heart disease, and many of us have multiple risk factors!

The study (Heart Disease H&S F Report) indicates that one of the biggest issues is that Canadians are in DENIAL and underestimate the severity of their risk factors, including (reported vs. reality):

  • How many of us believe we are healthy (90% vs. 1 in 10 without a risk factor for heart disease)
  • Being physically inactive or getting too few daily servings of fruits and vegetables (1/3 vs. ½)
  • Adults who believe they are obese (18% vs. 25%).

Go to the link above for the full story and get a Health App for your mobile phone. Meanwhile, what can YOU do – TODAY – to begin a “course correction” on your Wellness Journey?

FEBRUARY ‘HEART MONTH’ PROMOTION
Heart disease is nothing to take lightly! My father had his first heart attack when he was 39, and quadruple bypass surgery nearly 2 years ago – it is SERIOUS stuff!! There is NO time like the present to re-take ownership of YOUR OWN Wellness, and I’m here to help you succeed in doing that!

FUNDRAISER for the HEART & STROKE FOUNDATION
One of my goals as a Wellness Coach is to help others NOT have to go through the life-threatening physical & emotional stress of heart disease  – through prevention and through maintaining optimum wellness in ALL areas of our lives – for ourselves and our families!

And YOU can help. I’m sure you know 2 or 3 people who could use more “whole-life” Wellness and Balance in their lives.

See the side panel for our REFERRAL BONUSES this month. Now that’s a true “win-win”!

We offer a FREE initial consultation to explore how our services can best benefit the client.

“Mamma Bears and Their Cubs!”

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Lighthouse Wellness Strategies Newsletter – January 2011

What Will Mamma Bears Do For Their Cubs?

If you are a “Mamma Bear”, or know some, you know that there is very little – if anything – that they would not do for their “cubs”!! Am I right? Perhaps you saw that with your own mother.

There is a reason why they say that, ‘if you ever come across a mother bear in the woods, never, ever, EVER get between a mother bear and her cub!’ That is because mother bears will fiercely protect their cubs, at any cost!

I was in a conversation with a friend recently and was reminded of this truth. She was in the midst of protecting (and endeavouring not to over-protect) her “cub”, but was wise enough to check in with other “Mamma Bears” before striking out. Smart woman!

It made me think about how this relates to our own wellness. Whether you have your own “cubs” or not, whether you are a “Mamma Bear” or a “Papa Bear”, or perhaps a “Sister” or “Brother Bear”, etc., chances are there are people for whom you would “go to the mat”. It might even be your employer.

We are often willing to take a stand and stick our necks out for others, and may even sacrifice ourselves to do it. It is an admiral quality…to a point!

But here’s my question, as it relates to wellness:

What would you NOT do for your “cubs” (whoever they may be)?

What I’m seeing with many of my clients – and people in general – is that we are often willing to give 100% and MORE to others, but perhaps are under-investing in ourselves! A long time ago, I heard Oprah say “If Momma doesn’t have $5, she can’t give $5!” It is SO TRUE! If we don’t invest in our own wellness, we can’t in turn give so much to our families, our friends, our work-life, etc.

A lot of the women I encounter feel it is somehow selfish to take time for themselves – whether it be for exercise, connecting with friends, or just having a few moments of quiet! They feel tremendous guilt! However, they have no problem turning their back on their own needs in order to fill the needs of others.

I would suggest that we are hard-wired to be giving and nurturing but that, to do so at the expense of our own personal wellness is not sustainable! It all comes back to a degree of BALANCE “more or less”, as I tell my clients. It’s fine to “borrow” from one area of our life to serve another (as we did over the recent Holidays, where we borrowed from the Professional area and gave to the Relational piece) but, over time, we need to bring our total wellness back to a state of equilibrium.

If we continue to borrow from our Physical Wellness (Healthy Eating and Physical Activity), Emotional Wellness (managing the stressors that are part of our modern world), and Spiritual Wellness (taking time to engage in things which make our spirits sing!), we will inadvertently sabotage our own “whole-life wellness” and possibly that of those we care so much about!

If you knew that caring more for “Mamma Bear” was, in fact, a direct benefit to your “cubs”, would you do it? Of course you would! And, guess what, it is! By investing in your own self-care you give your “cubs” a more resourced, balanced “Mamma Bear” AND a role-model for how they can, in turn, care for themselves – throughout their lives! That is TRULY a gift worth giving!

So…what will it take for you to make this investment in yourself? Do you need to give yourself “permission”? Do you need to draft a “contract” between yourself and those closest to you – to manage everyone’s expectations? Do you need the support, strategies, and accountability that a Wellness Coach can give you? Whatever you need, make it happen. You’re worth it!!

So…we’re almost a month into the New Year now. Many of us started off 2011 full of great aspirations and intentions, embracing the possibilities of a fresh start, with the ever-present “New Year’s Resolutions”.

Did YOU set New Year’s Resolutions for 2011? How are you doing with them? Statistics say that as many as 25% of people who made resolutions have already abandoned them by this point. Are you one of the 25% – or are you still on track?

Either way, take a moment and pat yourself on the back! You are already a winner by setting goals and wanting to stretch yourself! After all, if we don’t have somewhere we want to go (a goal), what determines our direction each day, and how will we know when we get there?

If you (or someone you know) set some resolutions for the New Year, I’d love to hear from you:

  • WHICH AREA of “whole-life wellness” did your resolution address (Physical, Emotional, Relational, Spiritual, Financial, or Professional – or more than one)?
  • Are you STILL ON TRACK with your goal?
  • What is the BIGGEST CHALLENGE you’ve faced so far and how did you overcome it?
  • What’s your best piece of ADVICE to others who want to make a change (in any area of their life)?
  • What would be the BIGGEST HELP to keep you on track, or bring you back on track?
  • What is YOUR BIGGEST MOTIVATOR that makes you pursue this goal? (This is key!)

I invite you to Comment on this Blog –  join in the conversation!!

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Gail

I just wanted to take a moment to pass on to you my sincere wishes for a Joyous and Rejuvenating Holiday Season, and an Abundant and Well New Year!

During this past year, it has been a privilege for me to more directly bring the message of “whole-life” wellness to my clients, colleagues, and others who follow our website, Facebook, or Twitter posts!

I encourage you to reflect on your past year and celebrate the achievements and joys you’ve experienced. This is a perfect time to be “in the moment” and fully appreciate the bounty of this time of year and the spirit of love and caring that it brings – and bring that forward into the future.

Best Wishes for the Holiday Season and an Abundant and Well New Year!

Gail

It’s hard to believe that one week from today is Christmas Eve!! How are you doing in your preparations for the Holidays? Is everything “cooking along nicely” or are you sprinting from activity to activity trying to get everything ready?

One thing I know for sure: Christmas will come regardless of what we do and don’t have done! The universe doesn’t wait until we have everything perfect before allowing the Holidays to be upon us. Unlike in Who-ville, there is nothing that will stop the Holidays from coming. So…take a breath (in fact, I recommend breathing deeply and regularly!) and reevaluate all that you’re trying to do in advance of the “big day”.

And now, a question for you: what is your biggest Wellness Challenge during the Holiday Season? If you consider your “whole-life” wellness – looking at your Physical (Healthy Eating and Physical Activity), Emotional, Relational (Family & Friends), Spiritual, Financial and Professional  Wellness– what is the most difficult piece for you to keep in balance this time of year? I would invite you to develop one or two simple strategies to address your top challenge to aid you in maintaining greater wellness over the Holidays.

Let’s say you said physical activity is your biggest challenge. Then perhaps you could set a modest goal of exercising – walking, doing crunches, chasing the dog, whatever works for you – for just 10 or 15 minutes a day over the next week or two. Does that sound possible for you?

Or, if you’re like many of us, maybe your biggest challenge is eating well with all the added temptations available at this time of year. If that sounds like you, why not try to just plan ahead so that you first ensure you meet your basic nutritional requirements (getting adequate “real food” from the various food groups) and then enjoy the “goodies” of the season in a mindful way – be intentional with the things you choose to consume (and keep an eye on the quantities) and focus on what I call “worthy calories” – those things you really love! I like to bypass those less worthy and save my indulgences for the treats that are decadent to me. Then, for those you do choose, Enjoy Them Thoroughly!! That, too, is part of Wellness!

I would love to hear what your biggest challenges are and what strategies you’ve come up with to face those challenges. Please simply reply to this post to share your challenges and successes, or send me an e-mail. I’d love to hear from you!

Enjoy the Abundance of the Holidays, and Get Set for a Fabulous New Year!!

Gail

Make the Most of the Holidays – and Keep it REAL!

Lighthouse Wellness Strategies Newsletter – December 2010

Tips to Keep the “Happy” in the Holidays!

Are you starting to feel a little overwhelmed with all the hustle and bustle of the Holidays? Stressed out with the prospect of all that shopping, scheduling, visiting, wrapping, cleaning, …and whatever else is on your list? Well – GOOD NEWS! It doesn’t have to be so daunting. There are ways to enjoy the festivities of the season while keeping the “busy-ness” to a more reasonable level. And the added bonus? It sets you up for a more successful and Happy New Year!

5 Tips for Keeping it REAL!

With all that’s going on and all that you’re trying to wrap your mind around at this time of year, your best strategy for success is to remember to “Keep It REAL!” But what does that mean? Keep what real?

At Lighthouse Wellness Strategies, we focus on “whole-life” wellness strategies by providing you with Wellness Coaching & Navigation services. We help you find and keep Balance within and between the various parts of your life: Physical (Healthy Eating & Physical Activity), Emotional, Spiritual, Relational (Family & Friends), Financial and Professional.

Here we will focus on just a few of these areas and how you can try to keep them in balance over this busy season:

1. Healthy Eating - now is not the time for an ambitious “shaping up” goal. Just try to maintain at this point, enjoy the treats of the season (“everything in moderation”, right?) and get back into the swing in January.

2. Physical Activity - at this busy time, one of the best things you can do for your body is to remember to USE it! Just a quick 15-minute walk here and there does wonders for your body – and for your mind!

3. Relationships - remember to keep your expectations “real” in terms of relationships with family and friends. That slightly annoying uncle will probably still be annoying during the Holidays. Add to that all the extra busy-ness, nostalgia, and hopes of the season and you can understand why sometimes we get a little edgy. That said, it’s a great time to extend the hand of kindness and, perhaps, move past some grudges of the past.

4. Emotional – many of us are especially cheery at this time of year but remember that, for some, this can be a more stressful time. Some people are missing loved ones – maybe they live in another part of the world or are serving overseas – and some of us have no family or friends nearby. Try to see the humanity in those around you and see what YOU can do to brighten someone else’s Holiday Season…and yours at the same time!

5. Financial – one of the best things you can do for yourself for 2011 is to “keep it real” in 2010 in terms of your finances! We all know how great it feels to give that special gift, especially when “it’s on SALE!”. BUT…we also know how it feels when the gift wrap is gone and we admit to ourselves that we really couldn’t afford it! Ouch!! Starting the New Year with that stress is NOT a recipe for success. Instead, why not see what you can do that is still a thoughtful, loving gesture without compromising your financial integrity? Your loved ones want the best for you too, and that includes your Financial Wellness!

By taking just a few moments over the Holidays to “check in” with ourselves and consider our wellness in the various areas of our lives, we can ensure we’re still focussing on the “big picture” and really enjoying the abundance of the Holidays.

Wishing You and Yours all the Bounty of the Season, and Abundant Wellness in the New Year!!
